naPrincipal's Message - 8/11/2020

It is my pleasure to serve as the Highlands Elementary School Principal for a third year. I look forward to having the opportunity to continue moving Highlands Elementary forward in a direction that promotes student achievement and safety. As we continue to navigate unprecedented times and uncharted waters, please know that we will continue to provide high quality instruction as well as a safe and nurturing learning environment whether you are attending in-person or virtually.

Along with the Highlands Board of Education, Dr. Compton and I are so excited to be unveiling the newest additions to our educational plan to provide our students with high quality opportunities in all content areas. In just two short years, we have been able to provide our students and staff with high quality learning devices to assist with in-person and remote instruction. These devices were obtained through grant money from our Henry Hudson Tri-District Education Foundation, Federal Grant Money and our Local Technology Funds. Our students in grades K-5 who qualify, will receive pull out enrichment opportunities. We are proud to announce that we are continuing with our  6th grade English Language Arts and Mathematics based enrichment program. In addition to these wonderful program options for our students, in each classroom we have placed new high quality guided reading materials for students to engage in guided reading instruction.

In addition to our academic commitment, we are equally invested in the safety of our students and school community.

The faculty and I continue to be so very proud of the hard work of our students, and we look forward to seeing continued growth in their reading and math levels, and even more students who will embrace science, social studies, and the related arts.

We also anticipate another school year of fun family events sponsored by the PTO. Although these events may be different than what we are used to, our PTO is working on adapting to the  “new normal” given the current pandemic surrounding our society. I know that the events and fundraising opportunities will surely please all of our families. Your support by joining the PTO goes directly back to your children and their teachers through activities, events and supplies.

Highlands Elementary School continues to provide a quality education. Pride, Tradition and Excellence are the tenets, which have made Highlands Elementary the best it can be. We are very proud to be a part of its 88-year legacy.
